Our SLI programs worked with Fifth Avenue Committee this summer to create murals that represent themes of community, togetherness and will be tributes to the strength of the communities that the murals will live in.
We chatted with this year's teaching artists, Kristy McCarthy and Raul Ayala, about the meaning and symbolism behind the murals.
The Voices Her'd mural will depict the history of Gowanus, celebrating the accomplisments of activist movements and envisions a healthy and inclusive future for the community.
The Murald for Change mural will depict dual themes of celebration and resilience and demonstrates that together, we must continue to promote awareness and understanding of political issues, especially those that might affect local communities.
