“Together Under the Sun” 2023 Mural – Groundswell Paint Day & Dedication in Sunset Park

Groundswell NYC partnered with Paramount and Center for Family Life to support a community mural project titled “Together Under the Sun” at I.S. 136 in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

The mural was codesigned and painted with youth, young adults, and teaching artists over a series of weekly sessions as part of Groundswell’s programs, exploring themes of community, connection with nature, cultural diversity, self-expression, and access to education and opportunity.  

The project included a community paint day, where students, community members, and partners came together to actively contribute to the mural’s creation. The artwork features a central sun motif — symbolizing unity and shared experience — and reflects the diverse voices of the Sunset Park community. Assistant artist Lina Montoya supported the process alongside the lead artist during its development, making it a truly collaborative community art experience. 

A mural dedication was held to celebrate the finished piece and honor the work of the participating students, partners, families, and neighborhood residents. The mural continues to serve as a vibrant public artwork in the community and a testament to the power of collective creative expression.
