“We Are, I Am” Mural Dedication – Brownsville Community Justice Center - 9/26/23

On September 26, 2023, Groundswell NYC partnered with the Brownsville Community Justice Center and L+M Development Partners to unveil the community-designed mural “We Are, I Am” at the Marcus Garvey Apartments in Brownsville.

The mural was led by Groundswell teaching artists Eric Miles and Yolande Delius alongside youth participants from BCJC’s programs. Through the process, youth explored the history and impact of public art, reflected on social issues affecting their community, and translated their ideas into a bold mural celebrating unity, pride, and community identity.

The dedication event brought together youth artists, families, community members, and partners to unveil the finished work and celebrate the young creators’ contributions to public art and community expression. The mural features imagery of a diverse crowd proclaiming “We Are Brownsville,” a central figure with a megaphone, and symbolic elements representing resilience, pride, and hope for the neighborhood.
