As the practice of making art for and in the public realm continues to grow in stature and importance, it has become increasingly important to develop a pipeline of opportunity for emerging artists of color to sharpen their skills to successfully work in the arts. Through our capstone artmaking opportunity, Portfolio Development, young people work with professional artists to prepare a portfolio of their work for college and scholarship applications. All art materials will be supplied, as well as travel for field trips.

Interested guests view a gallery of art drawn by Portfolio Development students.
Through the creation of a college application ready portfolio of artworks, Portfolio Development participants express their technical artistic skills, personal artistic exploration, and creative potential. This program is a powerful tool to level an often-unfair playing field for talented young people of color throughout New York City.

Participants will learn how to professionally document and edit their works for presentation and will have the opportunity to participate in National Portfolio Day, go on college visits, meet with college representatives and participate in a Careers in the Arts Fair. Groundswell offers two levels of Portfolio courses, Portfolio Introduction (ages 13-16) and Advanced Portfolio (ages 17-19).
