The Design of Radically Re-Imagining Our Neighborhoods

On July 19, 2018, Groundswell and HBO presented “Radically Re-Imagining Our Neighborhoods,” a conversation around development and its impact on historically marginalized communities. HBO provided space at the HBO Theatre and hosted a pre-panel reception. The panel featured leaders in the fields of city planning, urban design, social justice and the arts. The lively discussion, attended by over 100 community members, examined the intersection between social justice and design—and how policymakers and community advocates can keep from being priced out of their spaces. Following the panel, youth artists from Groundswell’s 2018 Summer Leadership Institute shared images from their collaborative mural projects and how social justice informs their art.

Panelists included Robyne Walker Murphy (Executive Director, Groundswell), Justin Garrett Moore (Executive Director, Public Design Commission of the City of New York), Kweighbaye Kotee (Founder & CEO, Bushwick Film Festival), Dread Scott (Interdisciplinary Artist & Activist) and Emma Osore (Program Manager, Equity in Arts Leadership, Americans for the Arts).
