School-Based Programs

Inspiring the next generation of artistic talent.
A team of elementary students stand in front of a mural that declares "We Are A Community of Knowledge."

Through our school-based mural residency program, Groundswell creates access to challenging, standards-based visual arts learning for public school students through the research, design, and fabrication of public artworks that will be seen and enjoyed by the community for decades to come. Groundswell partners with approximately twenty public school partners each year, located in neighborhoods throughout all five boroughs.

During the mural residency, the youth artist team meets for a total of 16 three-hour sessions; these sessions are flexible and can be scheduled to most effectively meet the needs of the curriculum and classroom learning goals. For example, some residencies meet two to three times per week throughout the semester, while others are structured as intensive two-week mural interventions. Through our school-based efforts, Groundswell will provide hands-on, sequential creative skill development to students, and seed a next generation of artistic talent.

If you are a representative of a school and are interested in collaborating with Groundswell, please complete our community partner inquiry form.
