Groundswell partners with community-based organizations, schools, government agencies, and local businesses to raise awareness of critical social issues, stimulate learning, and inspire, engage, and build community. Through Groundswell programs, community partner organizations leverage the transformative potential of the creative process to generate activism and shift attitudes around social justice concerns.

Over the past twenty years, hundreds of community partners have come to Groundswell with a challenge. For example:

  • neighborhood group hopes to beautify its block, to inspire pride and a sense of possibility.
  • principal wants to engage students in affirming their school’s values and identity.
  • city employee is charged with raising awareness of a changed public policy.
  • community organization would like to reach new participants to enroll in its programs.

The effects of the mural live past the collaborative mural-making process, because they invite deep conversations about important issues. One mural that highlights the long-term impact is "Our American Narrative Continues," a six-panel series celebrating the rich history of immigration installed in the Ellis Island Museum library. When asked about the mural's impact. Ellis Island Interpretative Park Ranger Peter Wong said: “In a political climate where immigration has been described in such absolute terms, the artwork helps bring people together to discuss ideas of race, class, and identity. Months later, the Groundswell murals continue to help visitors explore the rich narrative of immigration, past, and present.”

Partners leverage the art-making process to solve these challenges and accomplish specific goals. There are many ways to become involved with Groundswell, such as becoming a partner, donating a wall, and joining us for one of our community events.
