On the weekend of October 21 and 22, Groundswell will participate in Gowanus Open Studios by presenting an exhibition of works titled "HERE/HEAR." The 2-day event will feature an artist talk-back on October 21st from 5-6pm, followed by an after-party sponsored by Blick and Bronx Brewery!
In order to amplify the underrepresented voices, specifically of people of color, women and queer folks, that often go unheard and under-acknowledged, HERE/HEAR will present a group of works by artists that explore the possibilities of existing in a culture of erasure and violence. By employing various strategies for art-making and expression, artists demonstrate the important and often brilliant ways of claiming space and making their voices heard in a culture of silencing.
In the exhibition, HERE/HEAR, artists consider the ways in which their work challenges modes of representation, systems & institutions of oppression, patterns of violence, criminalization and marginalization. They also consider the ways in which their work uplifts underrepresented communities, advocates for change, and restores a de-colonialized narrative.
An Artist Talk-Back will take place on Saturday October 21, from 5-6pm. The artists exhibiting will be in conversation about their works and specifically how they respond to the theme of HERE/HEAR. considering the ways in which their work challenges modes of representation, systems & institutions of oppression, patterns of violence/criminalization and marginalization.
