The Walls We Build & The Walls We Break

On the road to liberation and justice there will be walls we build and break for the sake of freedom. Join Groundswell Wednesday, February 24th at 5:00pm as we celebrate Black History Month with the next event in our Art for Liberation Conversation Series, The Walls We Build & The Walls We Break.

Groundswell has a history of making public art in Weeksville, a free Black community in Brooklyn founded in the 1830s by James Weeks and six other freedmen. Groundswell Executive Director, Robyne Walker Murphy will moderate the conversation exploring the history of the Weeksville Community and the importance of African American Genealogy. She will be joined by Weeksville Heritage Center Oral History Manager, Obden Mondesir; and Artist/African American Genealogist, Quincy LeNear Gossfield, who will share tips on how to start your own family tree. You can register for the event here.

The Art for Liberation Conversation Series is a series of virtual public programs - in conjunction with our 25th Anniversary Art for Liberation Fund - that will feature Groundswell staff, community members, community partners, alumni, and academics covering topics around the intersectionality of art and social justice. The lead partners for our Art for Liberation Fund and Art for Liberation Conversation Series are Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP and Spectrum.
