Groundswell Artist

Lehna Huie

My name is Lehna Huie and I am a multi-disciplinary fine artist, arts educator, curator, and activist exercising a belief in the power of multi-vocal art. My work amplifies stories of love, loss, and remembrance. My studio practice makes use of various materials on canvas, paper, and wooden surfaces and my style is a variety of abstract/ expression and portraiture to tell unique stories uplifting the lives and spaces of People of Color around the world descending from the cities of the African Diaspora and Caribbean. My portraits and figurative work are highly textured exploring identity, womanism and ritual. I am deeply committed to the fusion of arts and social change as a path to liberation: exploring the past, present and the future of struggle and freedom. I am an advocate for artists rights, reproductive justice and for survivors of domestic violence. I often do design work and workshops for organizations and grassroots communities. Collaboration and community are key components in my work.

I joined the Groundswell Team in 2014. A highlight has been getting to know such wonderful participants and talented artists. It's been wonderful to learn from everyone's unique styles and perspectives.  I have participated and lead in creating community murals for the last few years and am grateful for the experience to learn new techniques and grow as an artist.

I have exhibited at multiple spaces including the Puffin Cultural Forum, The Brecht Forum, Imagenation, Renaissance Fine Art, Dedalus Foundation, The Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, etc. and have held residencies at the Flux Factory, Snug Harbor and the Joan Mitchell Center. I have recently given presentations at the Nuyorican Cafe, the Whitney Museum, the Brooklyn Museum and upcoming at the Weeksville Heritage Center. I am honored to be a member of the Black Women Artist's for Black Lives Matter Collective. I have an upcoming solo exhibition at Meredith College titled, The Path to Liberation: saint sawdust and soul in October 2017.
